Cooking Steps

Prep
1
  • Before starting, preheat the oven to 350F.
  • Grease the base and sides of an 8x8-inch baking dish with 2 tsp oil, then line the base and sides with parchment paper, leaving a 2-inch overhang off the sides. (TIP: The overhang will make it easy for you to remove the bars from the baking dish later.)
  • In the microwave or small pot, melt 8 tbsp butter.
  • Halve, core, then cut apples into 1/2-inch pieces.
  • To a small bowl, add apples and 1 tsp cinnamon, then toss to combine.
Make batter
2
  • To a large bowl, add melted butter, brown sugar, half the white sugar, 1 tbsp maple syrup and egg, then whisk to combine. Add 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp cinnamon, then whisk to combine. Add flour, then stir with a spatula until fully combined.
  • Add cinnamon apples to batter, then stir with a spatula until combined.
  • Scrape mixture into prepared baking dish, then spread into an even layer using a spatula.
Bake bars
3
  • Bake in the middle of the oven for 30-35 minutes until golden and a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Transfer baking dish to a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes before transferring to the fridge for 1 hour to cool completely.
  • Meanwhile, to a medium bowl, add icing sugar, remaining maple syrup, a pinch of salt and 1 tbsp milk, then whisk to combine.
Finish and serve
4
  • Remove bars from the baking dish by gently tugging on the edges of the parchment paper.
  • Cut into 12 pieces, then drizzle with maple glaze.
  • Sprinkle sea salt flakes over top.

Customer reviews

Review summary

Updated on Feb 2026
  • Flavor: Sweet and delicious with cinnamon apple notes, though some found it overly sweet or salty.
  • Ease of prep: Easy to prepare, but a few had issues with baking time or achieving the right consistency.
  • Suggestions: Consider reducing salt, especially the flakes on top; shred apples for more even baking.
  • Texture: Moist with a texture between cake and brownie; some found it became soggy after a day.
  • Variations: Works well as a dairy-free option; consider adding a caramel sauce for extra indulgence.
