HelloFresh donates $20,000 to build school gardens in Nova Scotia

TORONTO, March 20, 2019
www.hellofresh.ca - Just in time for Spring, HelloFresh is empowering the next generation of cooks with the help of Evergreen’s National School Ground Greening Program. Two Nova Scotia schools, South Queens Middle School in Liverpool and École Secondaire de Clare in Meteghan River, each received a $10,000 grant with funds raised from HelloFresh’s holiday donation program to build a garden space for students. “The space will benefit students who have special needs, students who struggle to be successful in a general classroom setting, and those who miss out on these types of experiences at home.
It will also instill lifelong transferable skills and sustainable practices, as well as teach students about where food comes from,” said Vanessa Henwood, Teacher at South Queens. Since the 2017, many HelloFresh customers have donated the value of their box over the holidays. These donations, along with a contribution from HelloFresh, afford Canadian students new ways to discover fresh, high-quality ingredients. This happens through the creation of garden spaces for schools in underserved and culturally diverse communities across Canada.
“Involving kids in the growing of food and the preparation of ingredients leads to smarter eating habits! Learning about ingredient quality is simply learning about choice,” said Corby-Sue Neumann, Head of Menu Planning at HelloFresh. “Most of us have become disconnected from food and its source), and this program will both inform and empower students about the food choices they make in the future.”
Evergreen is a national not-for-profit dedicated to making cities flourish. For almost 20 years, Evergreen’s School Ground Greening Program has partnered with school boards across Canada to transform their grounds in order to provide more enriching outdoor learning experiences for thousands of children. “HelloFresh’s support of Evergreen’s School Ground Greening Program is a key ingredient to helping us make cities flourish,” said Karen Vianna, Evergreen’s Program Manager, School Ground Greening. “Through transforming school grounds, this partnership inspires healthy living habits and provides outdoor learning experiences for hundreds of students and teachers.”
Recipient schools apply through Evergreen with a plan for the green space and how they will maintain it. Students at École Secondaire de Clare plan on planting fruit trees. “School budgets have to respond to so many needs in the classroom that there is no space for something as 'extra' and game-changing as this garden project. We are so grateful for the support this grant offers us and we look forward to 'paying it forward' with inspired and nourished students that will have the vision to pass on the benefits to those around them.” said Sheila LeBlanc, Development Officer at Secondaire de Clare.
